Tri-Lo-Estarylla is a combined hormone pill that’s used to prevent pregnancy. It contains two different hormones, norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol, that work to stop you from getting pregnant. When used correctly, combined oral contraceptive pills (COCP) are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
Tri-Lo-Estarylla contains three different doses of pills in each pack, it is known as triphasic birth control. This means that the dosage of hormones can rise and fall as needed throughout your cycle. This follows the hormone fluctuations in your natural cycle more closely.
The hormones in Tri-Lo-Estarylla (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol) work in three different ways to prevent pregnancy:
These combined effects make pregnancy less likely.
Tri-Lo-Estarylla can also help to regulate your period and make it lighter. It can even help with PMS symptoms that many women experience during their menstrual cycle.
For immediate protection from pregnancy, you should start taking the first active Tri-Lo-Estarylla pill on the first day of your period. If you use this method, you will not need to use any additional methods of contraception.
If you use the ‘Sunday Start’ (i.e. you start taking Tri-Lo-Estarylla on a Sunday, and it’s not the first day of your period), you should use additional barrier methods of contraception such as condoms for the following 7 days that you take Tri-Lo-Estarylla.
To ensure you are taking this medicine correctly, you should:
Here are the instructions you should follow if you miss 1 or more pills:

If you miss 2 active pills in week 3 OR If you miss 3 or more active pills in a row in weeks 1, 2, or 3: |
---|
Day 1 start (you started taking the pill on the FIRST day of your period): Throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack that same day. Sunday start (you started taking the pill on the Sunday after your period starts): Continue taking one pill each day until Sunday, then throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack that same day. Use an additional method of contraception (such as a condom) as a backup if you have sex within 7 days after missing pills. |
Every pack of Tri-Lo-Estarylla has 21 active birth control pills and 7 inactive pills. The ‘inactive’ pills don’t have any hormones in them. Having a break from the hormones means you can have your period, while still taking the inactive pills helps you remember to take them every day.
Each blister card contains coated tablets in the following order:
Tri-Lo-Estarylla is safe for most women to use as a daily contraceptive. However, it may not be suitable for some women due to an existing health condition or medication interaction.

Tri-Lo-Estarylla may affect how some medicines work and vice versa. Inform your healthcare provider if you use any of the following:
Grapefruit juice can interact with the birth control pill and can lead to higher blood levels of the medication. This could increase the risk of experiencing side effects of this medicine.

Before starting this medication, you must consider the precautions associated with it.
Tri-Lo-Estarylla pills don't protect you against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This means that extra protection (e.g. condoms) may still be required during sex.
You should talk to a doctor if you intend to use this medicine during a long journey, or when you are due to have surgery. This is because Tri-Lo-Estarylla may increase the risk of blood clots during these events.
Like all medicines, Tri-Lo-Estarylla can cause side effects. You may experience spotting or light bleeding in between your periods when you first start taking it.
You may also feel sick (nauseous), especially during the first few months of treatment. This will usually go away with time. Contact your healthcare provider if these symptoms do not go away.
Other common side effects include:

Please be aware that if you miss a period and have not taken Tri-Lo-Estarylla as directed, or you miss 2 periods in a row or feel like you may be pregnant, call your healthcare provider. If you have a positive pregnancy test, you should stop taking Tri-Lo-Estarylla.
Apart from preventing unwanted pregnancy, Tri-Lo-Estarylla has other benefits. These include regulating your periods and potentially making them less painful. It may also help with acne.
