What is Tinidazole?

Tinidazole is an oral antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including bacterial vaginosis (BV). BV is an infection caused by an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the vagina. Tinidazole belongs to a group of medicines called nitroimidazoles. It works by killing the organisms that can cause infection.

Tinidazole is approved by the FDA. At SpeedyHealth, our doctors are able to prescribe Tinidazole for BV after you complete an online consultation.

How does Tinidazole work?

Tinidazole works by interfering with the DNA of harmful microorganisms. Once it is inside the body, it causes the DNA strands to break, which stops the organism from copying its DNA or making new cells. This damage ultimately kills the bacteria or protozoa and treats the infection.

What are the benefits of using Tinidazole?

There are many benefits of using Tinidazole to treat BV:

Broad-spectrum action

Tinidazole is effective against both bacteria and protozoa. It treats a wide range of infections apart from BV, such as:

  • Giardiasis (an intestinal infection caused by contaminated water or food)
  • Amebiasis (a parasitic infection of the intestines or liver)
  • Trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection)

Rapid action

The drug is quickly absorbed in the body and begins acting on the infection soon after taking the first dose.

Convenient dosing

Tinidazole has a long half-life which means it stays active in the body for longer. This reduces the need for frequent doses, as such, the tablet only needs to be taken once daily.

How effective is Tinidazole?

Tinidazole has been proven to be effective in treating bacterial vaginosis.

In 21 clinical studies looking at how well Tinidazole works for treating BV, researchers found that Tinidazole was very effective in getting rid of the signs and symptoms of BV compared to a placebo.

The cure rate for patients treated with Tinidazole at a dose of 1g daily for 5 days was 91%.

Who can and cannot take Tinidazole?

Tinidazole is an effective option for many women suffering from BV however, it may not be suitable for everyone.

Who can take it?

Tinidazole tablets are suitable for adult women suffering from bacterial vaginosis who prefer using a tablet.

Who cannot take it?

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to Tinidazole or other nitroimidazole medicines. This medicine is not suitable for pregnant women, especially those during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Speak to your doctor before taking this medicine if you:

  • have or have had a blood disease
  • suffer from organic neurological disorders (e.g. seizures and peripheral neuropathy)
  • have a current vaginal yeast infection (thrush)
  • have liver or kidney problems
  • are over the age of 65

How and when should I take Tinidazole?

To treat BV, the recommended dose is 1g (2 of the 500 mg tablets) once a day for 5 days.

Take this medicine by mouth with food and a full glass of water. Make sure you finish the entire course of this medicine, even if you start to feel better. If you stop taking Tinidazole too soon or skip doses, your infection may not be completely cured and the bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at your usual time. Do not take double or extra doses.

How long does Tinidazole take to work?

This medicine starts to work as soon as you take the first tablet. The tablets are quickly and fully absorbed into the body after the first dose. The peak concentration of the medication is reached approximately 1.6 hours after taking the dose.

Your symptoms should improve within a few days of taking this medicine, and BV should completely resolve within 5 days of taking the treatment. However, if your infection worsens or your symptoms persist, speak to your doctor.

How long should I take Tinidazole for?

Take these tablets for 5 days in a row. Make sure to finish the entire course, even if you start feeling better. If you stop early, the infection might not go away completely or may return.

What lifestyle changes should I make while taking Tinidazole?

It’s important to make certain lifestyle changes to ensure this medicine remains effective:

Image 1 Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially if you experience side effects like nausea or diarrhea.

Image 2Maintain good hygiene

After using the toilet, wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria from the rectum from spreading to the vaginal area.

Image 3Wear breathable underwear

Wear underwear made from breathable fabrics to help keep the vaginal area dry. Avoid tight, synthetic fabrics, as these can trap heat and moisture and promote bacterial growth.

Image 4Avoid harsh soaps
