About Advair

What is Advair and how does it work?

Advair is a combination inhaler used for the management of breathing conditions such as asthma and COPD. It contains the active ingredients fluticasone propionate (a corticosteroid) and salmeterol (a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist - LABA).

Corticosteroids help to reduce inflammation in the lungs, while LABAs help relax the muscles around the airways in your lungs. This combined action helps to prevent symptoms, such as wheezing, cough, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

Who can use Advair?

Advair is recommended for patients with asthma and COPD.

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to fluticasone propionate, salmeterol, or any of the ingredients in this medicine.

Before using Advair, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, especially if you have:

  • heart problems

How do I use Advair correctly?

To use the Advair HFA inhaler correctly:

  1. Take the cap off and look inside the mouthpiece for foreign objects.
  2. Shake the inhaler well for 5 seconds.
  3. Breathe out through your mouth and push as much air from your lungs as you can.
  4. Put the mouthpiece in your mouth and form a seal around it with your lips around it.
  5. Push the top of the canister down all the way while breathing in deeply and slowly through your mouth.
  6. Remove the inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for about 10 seconds, or for as long as is comfortable.
  7. Breathe out slowly away from the inhaler.
  8. Wait for 30 seconds, then shake the inhaler well and repeat steps 3 through 7.
  9. Rinse your mouth with water after inhaling the dose. Spit out the water and do not swallow.

To use the Advair Diskus inhaler correctly:

  1. Take the inhaler out of the foil pouch just before using it for the first time.
  2. Hold the inhaler in your left hand and with your right hand, push the thumb grip away from you as far as it will go until the mouthpiece is fully visible.
  3. Slide the lever until you hear it click. This means that the inhaler is now ready to be used.
  4. Exhale all the air from your lungs, then put the mouthpiece to your lips.
  5. Breathe in quickly and deeply through the Diskus.
  6. Then, remove the inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for 10 seconds, or for as long as is comfortable.
  7. Breathe out slowly away from the inhaler.
