The standard recommended dosage of Amerge for migraine headaches is 1 or 2.5 mg as a single dose. In care headache does not diminish sufficiently or comes back after being relieved, a follow up dose may be taken after four hours of the last dose. The medication dosage should not exceed 5 mg during any twenty four hour period. For patients with kidney or liver disease, the recommended dosage is less than 2.5 mg as a single dose once daily with a maximum limit of 2.5 mg during any twenty four hour period.

Amerge should also be administered with caution to patients with impaired renal or hepatic functions since this might alter the absorption, metablism or excretion of the drug. The medication is not advisable for patients with ischemic or vasospastic coronary artery disease because it can cause severe side effects. Pregnant women should avoid taking Amerge since it could cause harm to the developing fetus. It is advisable to use adequate contraception while on the medication. If you think you are pregnant, discuss it with a doctor and stop taking Amerge as soon as possible.

Like all other medications, Amerge also has its side effects which include pain or tightness in the chest or throat sudden and/or severe abdominal pain, shortness of breath, wheeziness, heart throbbing, swelling of eyelids, face or lips, skin rash and skin lumps, tingling, heat, flushing (redness of face lasting a short time), heaviness or pressure. In rare cases people may feel drowsy, dizzy, tired or sick. It is advisable to consult a doctor immediately if any of the side effects listed above get aggravated or persist over an extended period.

Amerge tablets may be split and taken at half the dose but only after medical advice. Do not use this medication indiscriminately; it should be administered only to treat an actual migraine attack.
