Used For

Aciphex is an anti-ulcer agent that is prescribed as treatment for healing and symptomatic relief from erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and duodenal ulcers. It is normally prescribed as a short term (4 to 8 weeks) treatment. Treatment can be extended for 8 weeks if expected results are not achieved during first 8 weeks of treatment. Most patients heal within four weeks.

Directions

The recommended oral dose of Aciphex for adults is 20 mg delayed-release tablet once daily for four to eight weeks. Dosage may be increased or decreased as per medical advice if expected results are not achieved after 8 weeks of treatment. For patients with problems of high acid levels in stomach, Aciphex can be started at 60 mg once a day with increase in dosage as advised by the doctor.

How It Works

Aciphex tablets should always be taken whole and should not be chewed, crushed or split. As long as alternative therapy is available, Aciphex should not be prescribed for pregnant women.

Side Effects

The most commonly experienced side effect of Aciphex is headaches. Other less common side effects include constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, feeling weak, gas, heartburn, itchy skin, nausea and vomiting, numbness, tingling, pain or weakness in hands or feet, sleepiness & stomach pain.
