Simvastatin Used For

Simvastatin (Zocor) is prescribed for patients with know heart problems to reduce elevated total-C, LDL-C, Apo B, and TG, and to increase HDL-C in patients. Through its properties of reducing high levels of bad cholesterol and boosting levels of good cholersterol, it helps prevent medical issues caused by cholesterol clogging the blood vessels.

Directions for Simvastatin drug

Individual patients may be recommended different dosages of Zocor drug. The usual recommended starting dosage is 20 mg to 40 mg once a day in the evening. For patients at high risk for a CHD event due to existing coronary heart disease, diabetes, peripheral vessel disease, history of stroke or other cerebrovascular disease, the recommended starting dosage is 40 mg/day.

How Simvastatin drug works

Simvastatin may cause elevation of CK and transaminase levels. Please consult your doctor immediately if you feel unexpected chest pain while on this medication. Zocor drug should not be prescribed for pregnant women since simvastatin might cause birth defects and other problems with the unborn baby.

Simvastatin drug’s side effects

Simvastatin Zocor drug may cause fever, muscle aches or cramps, severe stomach pain, unusual tiredness or weakness, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, gas, headache, heartburn, nausea, skin rash, stomach pain, decreased sexual ability and trouble in sleeping. Please consult your doctor in case of aggravated side effects.

Other common names for antihyperlipidemic medications include atorvastatin, cerivastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin & pravastatin all of which are used to lower levels of cholesterol and other fats in the blood. These medicines belong to the group of medicines called 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors. They work by blocking an enzyme that is needed by the body to make the bad cholesterol.
