Metoprolol Used For
Metoprolol Tartrate is prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure, angina pectoris (chest pain, usually caused by lack of oxygen to the heart due to clogged arteries), and heart attack. When prescribed for high blood pressure, it can be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive medications.
Directions for Metoprolol
The usual starting dosage of Metoprolol Tartrate 100 mg a day, taken as a single dose or split into two doses. It can be taken alone or with a diuretic. For angina pectoris, the recommended starting dosage is 50 mg taken twice a day.
How Metoprolol works
Metoprolol Tartrate should be used with caution by patients with a history of congestive heart failure. Any indications of worsening heart failure like weight gain or increasing shortness of breath should immediately be intimated to the doctor. Lopresor treatment should not be stopped abruptly since this could lead to increased chest pain and heart attack. Dosage should be gradually reduced. This medication may cause adverse effects in patients with asthma, seasonal allergies or other bronchial conditions or liver disease. Certain patients might feel drowsy or less alert while taking Lopresor. Hence it is advisable not to drive or operate dangerous machinery or perform any hazardous task that requires full mental alertness until you are full aware of your response to this medication.
Side effects of Metoprolol
Like all other medications, Metoprolol Tartrate Lopresor also has its side effects which include depression, diarrhea, dizziness, itching, rash, shortness of breath, slow heartbeat, tiredness, blurred vision, cold hands and feet, confusion, congestive heart failure, constipation, difficult or labored breathing, dry eyes, dry mouth, gas, hair loss, headache, heart attack, heartburn, low blood pressure, muscle pain, nausea, nightmares, rapid heart beat, ringing in the ears, short-term memory loss, stomach pain, swelling due to fluid retention, trouble sleeping, wheezing & worsening of heart irregularities. It is advisable to consult a doctor immediately if any of the above listed side effects get aggravated or persist over an extended period.
Other Metoprolol Information
Metoprolol Tartrate should be taken with food or immediately after eating. Take Lopressor exactly as prescribed, even if symptoms have disappeared. Doses of this medication should not be missed since any irregularity with the dosage of this medication might worsen health condition.
