Cozaar medication Used For
Cozaar is indicated for patients with hypertension & left ventricular hypertrophy to reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack. It is also prescribed for patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of hypertension for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy with an elevated serum creatinine and proteinuria.
Directions for Cozaar
The usual starting dose of Cozaar is 50 mg once daily. Patients with possible depletion of intravascular volume or those treated with diuretics may be started at 25 mg once daily. The drug can be administered once or twice daily with total daily doses ranging from 25 mg to 100 mg. It may be administered with other antihypertensive agents, and with or without food.
How Cozaar drug works
Cozaar may cause birth defects or other problems in the baby if taken during pregnancy. When taken with a diuretic (water pill), the medication may cause dizziness or lightheadedness during the starting phase of treatment. It is advisable to consult a doctor if the medicine makes you sick and causes continuing nausea and vomiting or diarrhea. These conditions may cause you to lose too much water and lead to low blood pressure. Patients on Cozaar may also experience dizziness, lightheadedness or if they are on an exercise regimen or take the medication during hot weather. Heavy sweating can cause loss of too much water and result in low blood pressure. Use extra care during exercise or hot weather.
Side effects of Cozaar drug
Like all other medications, Cozaar also has its side effects which include headache, back pain, diarrhea, fatigue, nasal congestion, cough, fever or sore throat, dizziness, leg pain, muscle cramps or pain, sinus problems & trouble in sleeping. It is advisable to consult a doctor in case any of the side effects become aggravated or persist for an extended period.

Cozaar may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents, including diuretics. Cozaar reduces the rate of progression of nephropathy as measured by the occurrence of doubling of serum creatinine or end stage renal disease (need for dialysis or renal transplantation).
